Chapter Ten

Steele’s good mood shattered as soon as he hit the stairs. His supervisor’s voice drifted up to where he stood. Agent Cole Davis had been assigned as his supervisor for about three months. During that time, they’d met a couple of times, but Steele’s caseload and Cole’s new supervisory duties had had them running in different directions. The talks they’d had were cordial, and Steele had gotten the feeling that the agent waiting for him was damn good at his job. Without a doubt, sending his supervisor here was the brass’s move to force Steele to use Liam as bait. Steele closed his eyes and cracked his neck, readying himself for the fight he knew was inevitable.

He drew a deep breath and entered the library. Steele caught a smirk on Masterson’s face before his agent made a hasty exit, following the rest of his team. Smart man. It took Steele a moment before he acknowledged his supervisor, and that was because he didn’t recognize him. Cole, a branch chief who was on course to become a deputy director, wore jeans, a T-shirt, ball cap and tennis shoes. He looked a solid ten years younger than he had when they’d met in Cole’s office. Standing beside him was a younger man who had the physical markers of someone with Down Syndrome.

“Steele, good to see you again. This is my brother-in-law Frankie. Frankie, say hello to Agent McKenzie.”

A broad smile spread across the young man’s face. “Hello, Agent. Do you work with Cole?”

“I sure do. He’s my boss.” Steele took Frankie’s hand and stage whispered, “But I like him anyway.”

Frankie laughed. “I like him too.”

Cole put a hand on Frankie’s shoulder. “Hey, bud, could you wait for me over there by the windows? I need to talk to Steele for a minute about police business.”

“Police business is important. I’ll wait.” The young man walked to the window, put his hands in his pockets and watched the landscaping crew that was currently trimming the manicured bushes of the estate.

“Sorry for inserting myself into your investigation, Steele, but the brass is breathing down my neck. Hell, they called me on vacation just to chew my ass. For some reason, the old men are hell bent on putting Mercier on the street to lure Miller out in the open. Care to tell me why?”

Steele glanced up as Liam walked into the room. He waited for Liam to make his way over to them.

“This is Liam Mercier. Liam, my supervisor, Cole Davis.” Steele watched as Liam threw up his defenses. He stepped back and looked down as he nodded, not extending his hand in greeting.

“Agent Mercier, I’m honored to meet you. Thank you for what you’ve given to the Bureau. I understand there have been lasting ramifications.” Cole’s comment didn’t carry an ounce of condemnation.

“I’m not an agent any longer.” Liam’s calm reply didn’t throw Steele’s supervisor.

“I realize that. Thank you for assisting us.”

Liam shrugged. “Not like I had a choice.”

Cole whipped his head toward Steele.
